Program Notes

Lodestar Fanfare – Richard Saucedo

Named for the North Star sailors relied on to guide the course of a ship, this two-minute fanfare for mature players is an exciting way to open any concert. Colorful harmonies and antiphonal passages for the upper woodwinds are supported with a brilliant display of rhythmic energy. (Publisher notes)

O Waly, Waly – Jay Bocock

Dating from the 1600s, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water Is Wide) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif is developed. A Celtic flavored allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival. (Publisher notes)

A Sailor’s Tale – David Eastmond

Head to the high seas with this adventure-filled work from the pen of a new writer. Canadian composer David Eastmond gives us an enjoyable glimpse into a sailor’s life at sea, from raising the sails to tranquil waters. Navigating 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 7/8 measures and hand-clapping rhythms add to the rollicking nature of this impressive new work. (Publisher notes)

The Wishing Well – Rossano Galante

European folklore describes a wishing well as a sacred place where one could utter a wish and then drop a coin into the well as payment. As legend has it, if the coin lands heads up, the guardian of the well would grant the wish, but if the coin lands tails up, the wish would be ignored.

The Wishing Well paints a musical portrait of a young child approaching a well and making their wish. The music ebbs and flows, utilizing solo instruments as well as the full ensemble, to describe the water at the bottom of the well. At the musical climax, the full ensemble states the main theme as the child tosses the coin into the well and we follow its journey down to the water. Delicate melodies, warm harmonies and lush orchestration capture the essence of the child’s wish. As the music tapers away during the final chords, we learn that the child has been granted their wish. (windrep.org)

Sailors Hornpipe – Sam Baltzer

This lively Scottish dance is often performed in nautical costume. The tune appears briefly in Sousa’s Jack Tar March, and is included on Mark O’Connor’s Appalachian Waltz album (under its other name, College Hornpipe). (Publisher notes)

River of Fire – Gary Ziek

Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, comes to life in this beautifully descriptive work. It begins with the chant of her devotees in Tribute, the first of four sections. In The Awakening, an ominous mood builds to an explosive climax. March to the Sea gets faster as two themes, creator and destroyer, interweave and reaches a fever pitch in Fire Meets Water. (Publisher notes)

Sea Songs – Ralph Vaughan Williams

Conducted by Dana Burt

Written in 1923 for the following year’s Wembley Exhibition, Sea Songs is a march medley of three well-known sea shanties: Princess Royal, Admiral Benbow, and Portsmouth. Written in typical march form with a trio, it was published simultaneously for brass band and wind band, and was later transcribed by the composer for symphony orchestra. It should be noted that Sea Songs was originally intended to be the final movement of Vaughan Williams’s Folk Song Suite. (windrep.org)

Of Sailors and Whales – Francis McBeth

Of Sailors and Whales (Five Scenes from Melville) is a five-movement work based on scenes from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. It was commissioned by and is dedicated to the California Band Directors Association, Inc., and was premiered in February 1990 by the California All-State Band, conducted by the composer. The work is sub-dedicated to Robert Lanon White, Commander USN (Ret.), who went to sea as a simple sailor.

The composer provided these notes for each movement:

I. Ishmael – “I go to sea as a simple sailor.”

II. Queequeg – “It was quite plain that he must be some abominable savage, but Queequeg was a creature in the transitory state — neither caterpillar nor butterfly.”

III. Father Mapple – “This ended, in prolonged solemn tones, like the continual tolling of a bell in a ship that is foundering at sea in a fog — in such tones he commenced reading the following hymn; but changing his manner towards the concluding stanzas, burst forth with a pealing exultation and joy.”

The ribs and terrors in the whale arched over me a dismal gloom

While all God’s sunlit waves rolled by, and lift me lower down to doom.
In black distress I called my God when I could scarce believe Him mine,
He bowed His ear to my complaint, no more the whale did me confine.
My songs forever shall record that terrible, that joyful hour,

I give the glory to my God, His all the mercy and the power.

IV. Ahab – “So powerfully did the whole grim aspect of Ahab affect me that for the first few moments I hardly noted the barbaric white leg upon which he partly stood.”

V. The White Whale – “Moby Dick seemed combinedly possessed by all the angels that fell from heaven. The birds! – the birds! They mark the spot … The whale, the whale! Up helm, up helm! Oh, all ye sweet powers of air, now hug me close … He turns to meet us … My God, stand by me now!” (windrep.org)
