Program Notes

FANFARE AND HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING – Chip Davis/arr. Robert Longfield

Adapted from the Mannheim Steamroller CD A Fresh Aire Christmas, this is two publications in one. First is a glorious fanfare in the High Renaissance tradition of antiphonal brass choirs echoing one another. Next is a contemporary Mannheim treatment of the familiar carol, complete with a rock groove combining rhythmic and harmonic surprises. Performable individually or as a set, this is a terrific and unique addition to the holiday repertoire for concert bands.

WHITE CHRISTMAS – Irving Berlin /arr. Robert Thurston

Dedicated to Nancy Green – Flute (Fanfare Winds)

The first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941, a few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Crosby subsequently recorded the song with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers at Radio Recorders for Decca Records in 18 minutes on May 29, 1942, and it was released on July 30 as part of an album of six 78-rpm discs from the musical film Holiday Inn.

The song established that there could be commercially successful secular Christmas songs.  Ronald D. Lankford Jr., wrote, During the 1940s, ‘White Christmas’ would set the stage for a number of classic American holiday songs steeped in a misty longing for yesteryear.” Before 1942, Christmas songs and films had come out sporadically, and many were popular. However, “the popular culture industry had not viewed the themes of home and hearth, centered on the Christmas holiday, as a unique market” until after the success of “White Christmas” and the film where it appeared, Holiday Inn.  Dave Marsh and Steve Propes wrote, “‘White Christmas’ changed Christmas music forever, both by revealing the huge potential market for Christmas songs and by establishing the themes of home and nostalgia that would run through Christmas music evermore.

In 1942 alone, Crosby’s recording spent eleven weeks on top of the Billboard charts. The original version also hit number one on the Harlem Hit Parade for three weeks, Crosby’s first-ever appearance on the black-oriented chart. The song also topped the following weekly charts in the same year: Songs with Most Radio Plugs, National record sales, and National sheet music sales. Re-released by Decca, the single returned to the No. 1 spot during the holiday seasons of 1945 and 1946 (on the chart dated January 4, 1947). The recording became a chart perennial, reappearing annually on the pop chart twenty times before Billboard magazine created a distinct Christmas chart for seasonal releases.

In Holiday Inn, the composition won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942. The song would feature in another Crosby film, the 1954 musical “White Christmas”, which became the highest-grossing film of 1954.

GAUDETE – Arranged by Brian Beck

The title is the Latin word for “rejoice,” and best describes this joyous holiday selection. The colorful setting of this 16th-century melody captures the intense passion of praise and is effectively contrasted with quieter moments of calm reverence. A wonderful musical treat for the holidays.

FANFARE FOR THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS – arr. Evan VanDoren

Fanfare for the Festival of Lights weaves two traditional Hanukkah melodies into a colorful, rousing celebration!  Ma’oz Tzur, translated, means “rock of ages”, and hints of the strength of faith felt by the Jewish people when reflecting on the story of Hanukkah.  In contrast, “The Dreidel Song” leans into a more playful side of the Hanukkah holiday, referencing a song about an often-played children’s game. Evan VanDoren writes:

As a young Jewish musician growing up in the United States, I performed an untold number of Christmas selections around the holiday season.  Truthfully, I enjoyed them all!  The concert band repertoire includes a wealth of masterfully crafted selections composed and arranged from melodies and concepts tied to the Christmas holiday.  However, there are decidedly fewer opportunities for young Jewish musicians to perform music derived from their own cultural and religious heritage.”

“My hope is that through creating this brief work, Jewish musicians will have the opportunity to perform music from their background, while all musicians join together in a musical celebration of the joy and awe of the holiday season!”

HOW SWEET THE SOUND – Brian Balmages

Explores a multitude of soundscapes and styles as the lyrical melody to Amazing Grace slowly unfolds in this powerful work. Largely original, the music draws heavily on gospel styles interspersed with contemporary harmonies, soaring fanfares, and a wash of beautiful colors.  Brian Balmages remarked, “When I consider performing this piece, I imagine my grandmother experiencing a moment where she could sing along.  She loved the song and sang it all the time.”

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS – Lyrics by Dr. Suess, Albert Hague/arr. Larry Clark

As both a classic animated TV special and a film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” has become an annual tradition for kids and adults alike. This arrangement includes two great songs and wonderful incidental music, this medley from the charming Dr. Seuss story was written for all the “Whos” down in “Whoville!”

A WINTER’S JOURNEY – Randall D. Standridge

This piece is a joyful, rhythmic celebration of winter travel and the people waiting at the other end of the road.  Using the familiar melody of “Over the River and Through the Woods” as the foundation, I’ve combined it with original material to create a fast-paced ride in a compound 12/8 meter—perfect for evoking the gallop of hooves, the jingle of bells, and the crisp energy of a snowy day.

This piece opens with a festive burst of momentum, full of active percussion, colorful scoring, and melodic moments for every section of the band.  In the middle section, the mood turns more reflective and nostalgic as if we’re remembering winter’s past, warm fires, and familiar faces.  Then, the music takes off again, building to a triumphant and energetic finale.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING – Richard Carpenter and Frank Pooler/arr. Chris McDonald

The lyrics were written in 1946 by 20-year-old Frank Pooler, which, according to him, were about a love interest he had at the time. Twenty years later in 1966, when he was choral director at California State University, Long Beach, two of his aspiring music students, Karen and Richard Carpenter, who were beginning to have success as a local band, asked him if he had any ideas for holiday songs.According to Pooler, they had become tired of the standard holiday songs they were singing. Pooler gave them the lyrics of the song he had written from years before and told them he did not think much of the original melody. According to Pooler, Richard wrote a new tune for the lyrics—the tune currently used—in 15 minutes. Four years later, in 1970, the Carpenters first recorded and released it as a single.

It’s just not Christmas until you’ve heard this beautiful love song by The Carpenters. Always a holiday favorite!

YULETIDE SLEIGH RIDES – Josh Trentadue

Trentadue writes, “Yuletide Sleigh Ride” is an adaption of my band piece, “A Wild Christmas Nightcap.”  That work explored finding a balance between the cozy, nostalgic, and sentimental feelings of the Christmas season with the commercialism & marketing that fuels & sustains it every year.  This piece quotes and references various Christmas carols while using an expansive percussion section and plenty of musical flurries and harmonies throughout its journey.  Overall, “Yuletide Sleigh Rides” is full of spirit and a wonderful celebration of the Christmas season.
