Program Notes

ANGELS OF JOY! – Arranged by Patrick Roszell

Angels of Joy! Combines three beloved traditional carols: “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and “Joy to the World!”

MINOR ALTERATIONS – David Lovrien

Let’s play a game of Christmas hide-an-seek!  Composer David Lovrien twist your favorite Christmas melodies into something new and inventive…a little darker perhaps, but still familiar and full of wonder.  By transposing the tunes from major key to minor keys, changing styles and overlapping melodies onto one another, each carol takes on a completely new character.  Alternately dramatic and funny, wistful and energetic, this medley is full of musical surprises from start to finish.

CHRISTMAS LEGENDS –  Gary P. Gilroy

This seasonal showcase combines some of the noblest Christmas carols in a regal setting that present the works in exciting new ways.  Good King Wencelas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The Coventry Carol, Greensleeves and Angels We Have Heard on High are presented in regal settings that accent their noble qualities.

SO WONDEROUS BRIGHTCarol Brittin Chambers

This setting of a Puerto Rican carol for concert band initially gives the effect of a smaller, more intimate traditional ensemble. Various combinations of instruments, colors, textures and rhythms are explored, showcasing the many sonic colors available with concert band instrumentation.

HOLIDAY DELIGHTCaleb Hammer

My favorite song from this season is “O Holy Night.”  Although arranging is not the focus of my composition career.  I love this tune, and I wanted to create a brand new work around the thematic ideas of this song (with a couple thematic calls to other classic holiday tunes).  In my mind there is no more enjoyable time of the year than the holiday season.  I love the colors, joy, the family, and of course, the food.

DREIDEL DANCE – Robert Thurston

Brighten the holidays with this lighthearted theme-and-variations mashup of The Dreidel Song and Hava Nagila. These two highly spirited tunes are run through a musically stylistic funhouse culminating in a breathtaking flurry of high-speed energy. The flying technical passages may be challenging, but this whirlwind presentation is well worth the effort.

STILLE NACHT – Franz Gruber/arr. Robert Longfield

This unusual setting of the traditional Christmas carol could be the hit of your concert! This lovely arrangement of Silent Night, faithful to the recording by Mannheim Steamroller, is refreshing and satisfying and even includes some tastefully written vocal parts for several sections of the band!
